Little Beaver MDL-5H 5.5 HP Honda GX160 Mechanical Earth Drill Power Head
The Little Beaver MDL-5H 5.5 HP Mechanical Earth Drill functions as a one-man gas post hole digger engineered to bore vertical holes in clay, dense turf, and root-filled soil for fence posts, deck footings, and sign installations. Powered by a 5.5 HP Honda GX160 OHV commercial engine paired with a 10:1 gear reduction transmission, this earth drill turns augers at 360 RPM while transferring counter-rotational torque back to the steel cart frame via a patented torque tube. Mounted on 8-inch semi-pneumatic puncture-proof utility tires, this American-manufactured power head eliminates kickback to allow solo operators to drill uniform holes across commercial fencing and landscaping projects.
Note: Auger drill bits, teeth, and shaft extensions are sold separately.
Best Used For:
- Commercial Fence Post Hole Drilling: Boring vertical post holes through dense clay, sod, and root-filled earth without operator kickback.
- Deck Pillar Footing & Concrete Form Boring: Digging uniform structural footing holes for deck posts, pergola piers, and sign post foundations.
- Soil Sampling & Horizontal Utility Boring: Executing soil core sampling and horizontal under-sidewalk utility pipe boring when connected to extension shafts.
Key Performance & Safety Features
- 5.5 HP Honda GX160 OHV Commercial Engine: Overhead valve gas engine provides reliable recoil starts, efficient fuel consumption, and long operational service life.
- Patented Torque Elimination Tube: Connects the engine chassis to the handle to absorb rotational forces, completely protecting the operator from arm-twisting kickback.
- High-Speed 360 RPM Auger Rotation: Spun by a 10:1 gear reduction transmission, the 360 RPM rotation clears dirt rapidly to produce clean, vertical hole walls.
- 8-Inch Semi-Pneumatic Utility Wheels: Puncture-proof rubber tires on a heavy-duty steel cart allow smooth wheeling over loose gravel, mud, and unpaved terrain.
- Steel Roll Cart Chassis: Steel frame supports the engine and flexible drive shaft assembly to allow single-operator transport and maneuvering.
- American Mechanical Engineering: Built in the United States using heavy-duty mechanical drive components engineered for demanding equipment rental fleets.

Pro-Tip: When drilling post holes in heavy clay or dense roots, allow the 360 RPM rotation of the Little Beaver MDL-5H to do the work rather than forcing the bit down. Periodically lifting the auger slightly while spinning flushes accumulated soil up the flighting, preventing the bit from binding at deep levels.
